I’m a procurement manager at a mid-size solar EPC. I’m not saying big is always better. I’ve seen large manufacturers abandon a product line. But the likelihood of orphaned equipment is lower when the shipment count is measured in gigawatts, not megawatts.

And if that number is even close to accurate—I haven’t audited their books, and I might be misremembering the exact figure—it tells me their supply chain is tested. That’s evidence I can take to our finance team.

Spec Sheets Are Where Trust Lives

Try this test. Ask a vendor for the meter specification.

A vague answer is a red flag. A clear answer looks like this: the Sungrow smart meter CT 100/20mA specification—100 A primary, 20 mA secondary—is right there in the public datasheet. I can verify it. I can size it. I can plan around it. That’s it.

Per the FTC’s Green Guides (ftc.gov), broad environmental claims need evidence. I hold vendors to the same rule: if you say it, show me the data sheet.

After that, I built a solar system worksheet. It lists every line item—inverter, modules, mounting, wiring, breakers, meter, CT, commissioning, permits, freight, tax. If a quote can’t map to the worksheet, I ask why.

Ask the Weird Questions

Some of the best procurement questions come from outside the solar office.

A colleague once asked me, “how long are the blades on wind turbines?” She expected one number. The real answer is “it depends on the turbine model.” Solar specifications work the same way. If someone answers without asking which model, they’re guessing. Guessing is fine in conversation. Not fine in procurement.

Transparency means you don’t have to dig for the details. If a supplier makes installation look easy in a video but the manual hides the conditions, you’re buying a sales page, not equipment.

The “Cheaper Inverter” Temptation

I get it. Budgets are real. I’ve been the person staring at a 15% price delta and wondering if the brand premium is worth it.

I went back and forth between a name-brand inverter and a challenger for two weeks. On paper, the challenger saved $18,000 on a 750 kW project. My gut said the risk wasn’t priced in. Then I asked the challenger for a warranty escalation path. The response took 11 days. In that time, a single failure at the site would have lost more than the $18,000 in production revenue. I chose the name brand.

To be fair, some challengers are excellent. But “excellent” and “unknown” are different categories. My job is to quantify the difference, not assume it away.

I’m not saying every project should use Sungrow. I’m saying every project should use equipment with visible, checkable, public specs. Sungrow happens to do that well.

The Bottom Line

There’s something satisfying about comparing proposals on the same worksheet. Not because it makes me look organized—because it turns a sales pitch into a technical document.

The cheapest quote is often the most expensive. A transparent quote, with every line item spelled out, might look higher on page one. But it’s the one that holds up when the racking arrives, the meter gets commissioned, and the inverter is still spinning out power a decade later.

I’ll pay for clarity. Actually, in the end, I pay less.
