Start with voltage, phase, main panel capacity, and existing meter. A 10kW inverter is the wrong size if the site is single-phase or the roof can't support the array. Before you place a PO, know what happens after delivery. Who commissions the inverter? Who sets up the meter communication? What's the lead time for a replacement CT or control board? These are the questions that separate a good quote from a bad one.
At some point in every renewable project, someone from finance will ask 'where are the wind turbines'. It's not a trick. They see 'renewable energy project' and think of the nearest wind farm. For most office buildings, the answer is that there are no wind turbines—this is a rooftop solar plus storage project. The question matters anyway, because it forces you to specify where the failure points are. For a wind turbine, it's gearboxes and blades. For a solar inverter, it's fans, capacitors, CTs, and the meter. Ask where the nearest spares warehouse is and how responsive the distributor is.
I'd rather work with a specialist who says 'we don't service wind turbines' than a generalist who says 'sure, we can handle everything'. That's the expertise boundary. It's the same reason I trust a vendor who says 'we don't do this particular meter model' and then recommends someone who does.
Final notes for the buyer
I have mixed feelings about 'one-stop shop' vendors. It would be convenient to order everything from one place. But after the $400 invoice lesson, I'd rather use specialists who know their limits.
This checklist works for us because we are a mid-size B2B company with predictable electricity usage and a single office. If you are a seasonal business, a multi-site operation, or have complex export limits, add more steps. The core checks stay the same.
To summarize: know the CT ratio, price the whole kit, verify integration with EV chargers and monitors, and ask where the spare parts are. Do that before you send the PO, and you'll save yourself the headaches I learned the hard way.
