The vendor's support email came back two days later with a response that told us to go through the distributor. The distributor's engineer was on vacation.

Another common question is 'how many amps for a level 2 charger?' The answer depends on the EVSE and the breaker: a 16A unit on a 20A circuit, a 32A unit on a 40A, or a 48A unit on a 60A. At 240V, a 32A charger pulls about 7.7 kW. That number changes the storage design completely. If a customer wants backup power for an EV charger, I need to know the amps before I select the inverter and battery.

This is where the Sungrow smart meter earns its place. It wasn't the cheapest metering option on the market. But having one consistent data source for PV production, export, and load helped us answer these questions with confidence.

People misunderstand lithium batteries

When people hear 'lithium battery,' they sometimes think of a lithium battery car audio build in a show car—big amplifier current for a few seconds. That's a fine example of peak power, but it's the wrong model for an energy storage system. An ESS has to deliver sustained, balanced power for hours while managing temperature and state of charge. The chemistry matters less than the battery management system and the thermal design.

This is part of why I stopped looking at only the price per kilowatt-hour. A lower price per kWh means nothing if the BMS can't handle the charging profile or the manufacturer can't answer a technical question.

Total cost checklist I use now

I still compare quotes. But now I compare four things:

  • Quoted price, including accessories like CTs and monitoring gateways
  • Expected reliability, based on documented shipments and field experience
  • Commissioning time, because labor is the line item that eats budgets
  • Support responsiveness, before and after purchase

That list doesn't guarantee a perfect project. It does make me less likely to repeat the 2018 mistake.

What I tell other buyers

To be fair, Sungrow isn't the right fit for every project. No manufacturer is. We happen to work in a market with straightforward net metering rules. If you're dealing with export limits, time-of-use rates, or utility-imposed smart meter requirements, the calculus might be different. This approach worked for us, but your situation may vary.

One more thing: I'm careful about how I talk about 'green' energy. Per FTC guidance (ftc.gov/green-guides), environmental claims need to be substantiated, and vague phrases like '100% clean' can get you in trouble. I read the FTC Green Guides because a marketing statement based on a guess is worth nothing.

There's something satisfying about the first time the Sungrow smart meter showed zero export during a utility inspection and the inverter data log matched. After the project closed, I went back to the spreadsheet and compared the real cost per watt with our earlier installations. It didn't have the lowest inverter price on the list. It had the lowest total cost.

I still don't have hard data on every manufacturer's defect rate. But I have eight years of purchase orders, service logs, and project schedules. They all point to the same lesson: the cheapest quote is the most expensive thing we ever bought.
